US Senator Bob Menendez Found Guilty of Bribery Charges
The court decided that Menendez, who doesn’t like Bitcoin, used his power as a senator to take gifts that he wasn’t supposed to take, including gold bars and a fancy car. This has made a lot of people who are interested in Bitcoin talk, because Menendez had previously said that Bitcoin is a “currency for criminals.”
It’s kind of funny that a senator who once wanted to make laws to control Bitcoin in El Salvador is now found guilty of a crime. Menendez helped propose the “Accountability for Cryptocurrency in El Salvador (ACES) Act.” If this law was passed, it would have made the State Department look into the risks to the US financial system because El Salvador made Bitcoin an official type of money.
Responding to the news, Stacy Herbert, who is part of The National Bitcoin Office in El Salvador under President Nayib Bukele, compared Menendez’s actions with those of President Bukele. She said that while Menendez was caught doing something wrong, President Bukele was being open by sharing El Salvador’s Bitcoin address with the public.
Herbert also said that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which Menendez was in charge of, should apologize to President Bukele and El Salvador. She called Menendez the real “bad guy” in this situation.
After the court decided, Menendez said he was innocent, saying, “I have never been a foreign agent; I have always been a patriot for my country.” But U.S. Attorney Damian Williams disagreed, saying, “This wasn’t politics as usual; this was politics for profit.”
Menendez, who has been a congressman since 1993 and a senator since 2006, has so far not agreed to quit his job, even though people like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have asked him to.
