Ethereum Prepares for ‘Dencun’ Upgrade with Imminent Testnet Rollouts

The ‘Dencun’ upgrade, the most transformative change to Ethereum in the past year, will be put through its paces on the Sepolia and Holesky testnets. These major trials are the final ones before the launch online on the main network, which can be regarded as an important achievement in the world of Ethereum.

The trials on Sepolia and Holesky, set for January 30 and February 7, respectively, follow the Goerli testnet’s successful activation. Although the Goerli implementation faced minor complications, it nonetheless paved the way for this final stage of testing.

The upcoming ‘Dencun’ hard fork will introduce ‘proto-danksharding,’ which is expected to lower transaction fees on Ethereum’s layer 2 networks and make data storage more cost-effective. These upgrades help significantly improve network efficiency and scalability.

Timings for the test activations have been disclosed, with the Sepolia testnet activation planned for January 30 at 22:51 UTC, followed by the Holesky testnet on February 7 at 11:34 UTC. The success or failure of these tests will determine the maturity of the upgrade and its eligibility for the mainnet release.

The Ethereum Foundation’s protocol support lead, Tim Beiko, has called for node operators on the respective networks to update their systems ahead of the Dencun tests.
